My journey into advocacy through the arts began in 2006 with a simple decision to volunteer as a model for the Telluride AIDS Benefit fashion show. That pivotal moment revealed how my background in performing arts could become a powerful force for social change, merging artistic expression with humanitarian purpose. As I progressed from model to assistant choreographer and ultimately to head choreographer, I discovered that both performing artists and community members share a deep desire to contribute to charitable causes, but often find themselves limited in their ability to make monetary donations. This realization sparked an innovative solution – creating opportunities for everyone to donate something far more valuable: their time, talent, and passionate energy.
Working closely with talented artists and directors, we expanded this unique model of theatrical fundraising from Telluride to Boulder, Aspen, Denver, and New York City. This year marked our 10th anniversary with the Aspen production – a milestone that highlights the transformative power of these shows. What amazes me most is witnessing local community members step into the spotlight alongside trained performers: the neighborhood barista, ski patrol member, kindergarten teacher, and healthcare worker all discovering their inner performer. I watch someone walk into auditions nervously, perhaps having never set foot on a stage, then see their transformation by show day as they strut down the runway with newfound confidence and sparkling joy. These productions create connections that transcend ordinary social boundaries, forming lifetime friendships and vibrant communities that extend far beyond the stage, while providing our charitable partners with the funding and visibility to expand their impact year after year.
